On Friday 20th November, as the main feature of the next Friends social evening, we shall be showing the independent docu-drama, The Age of Stupid. The film, directed by Franny Armstrong, who also directed the documentary McLibel that took on the mighty MacDonalds empire, and starring Pete Postlethwaite of Brassed Off fame, deals with the vital issue of climate change, presenting a picture of what the world fifty years hence could look like if we ignore the current warnings about the effect we are having on our planet.

Made for just under half a million pounds, raised through voluntary donations, the film is the centrepiece of a world-wide campaign to raise the profile of climate change and bring additional pressure to bear on the world’s leaders at the up-coming Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December. The Conference will be attempting to produce a new climate change agreement to replace the Kyoto deal. It is being billed as the last chance for coordinated world action on this issue, if we are to avoid devastating consequences, if not for ourselves then for our children and succeeding generations.

Alongside the film we shall have a quiz to test the knowledge of those present about climate change and associated matters. There will also be musical entertainment to lighten the mood, as well as refreshments.

Whether you are convinced about the reality of climate change or remain sceptical, this is an important film that has been favourably compared with Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth as a carrier of the message. We hope you will join us on the 20th at 19:30 for what will be a stimulating and thought-provoking evening.
