The Gardens of the Museum

These gardens, as they stand today, were only created in 1999.

Until the middle of the twentieth century, in spite of the fact that the mansion itself was sustained by profits from the cork industry, the household kitchen got its fresh fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden. They also produced their own milk from cows kept in the surrounding fields.

When the museum was installed in 1986, the old gardens were in a state of decline. Today, those old agricultural activities have been taken over by other types of cultural activities which are in fact not so very different. As the famous Portuguese writer Miguel Torga once said: “ A pen is the sister of the spade: a page of a book is a sown field”.

The Museum is open on weekdays from 10:oo until 13:oo and from 14:00 until 17:00; on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays it is open from 14:00 until 17:00. Entry 2 €, Children 1 € (Free to senior citizens and Friends of the Museum). For guided tours ring 289 840 100.
