Liz Allen studied painting at Croydon College of Art and Design and Bath Academy of Art 1976-79, obtaining a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting.
After art college, she continued painting in various back bedrooms and attics, basements and bathrooms, etc, but quickly ran out of space (she says they were encouraged to paint large at college!). Eventually gave up and got a job
After a 15 years working for the Arts Council and South Bank Centre, London, she moved to Brighton where she exhibited work every May during the Brighton Festival, between 1995-2004.
In 2005, Liz moved to the Monchique area, and her current paintings are mainly of the Algarve landscape and scenery, from rural landscape to town scenes.
Most of her paintings start with a cartoon like drawing; a direct and spontaneous response to being in a place. Colour is the most important element in her paintings. She enjoys being bold and uncompromising with colour - even quite extreme at times. Pattern is also a feature she likes to develop and play with. Her paintings have a simplified style and could be considered naive (or faux naive) as she paints mainly without particular reference to formal qualities. There's a humourous aspect too, when her sense of the absurd (or childlike pleasures) creeps in and demands she paints something quite obviously the 'wrong' colour for example.
