Oktober-Höhepunkte

In chronological order, here are the highlights of our October events:

1: Good Time Jazz Band

For those who appreciate mainstream Dixieland Jazz. Ian Carfrae and his band present great dance music from the 1920's and 30's.
Sunday 1st October, 8.00 p.m. Tickets: 12 euros (Friends: 10 euros).

14: Arsénio Martins Ensemble

Arsénio Martins is a pianist, composer and director of a contemporary music ensemble that has had huge success with various events in Portugal and Spain.

Arsénio also leads a jazz quartet - Arsénio Martins and the Aroma Jazz Trio. In São Brás de Alportel, Arsénio (with José Angel Galliardo (cello) and Eugénio García (percussion) performed music that he had written to accompany the Ernst Lubitsch silent movie, Carmen, which was hailed as the best cultural event I have seen and heard in the Algarve in 10 years.

The ensemble features: A Martins (piano, flute), Fernando García (violin), José Angel Galliardo (cello) and Eugénio García (percussion). Amongst the CDs Arsénio has recorded, A Cor dos Anjos (The Colour of Angels), Sorrisos Invisivéis (Invisible Smiles) and Luz nas Lágrimas (Light on Tears) are major highlights.
Saturday 14th October, 8.30 pm. Tickets: 15 euros (Friends: 14 euros).

29: David Creevy, Irish Guitarist

A Tribute to Andres Segovia is a recital of classical music for guitar. Works by Francisco Tarrega, Isaac Albéniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Andres Segovia, Andrew York, Stanley Meyers, Francisco Tarrega, Nikita Koshkin.

Creevy is recognised as Ireland’s most talented young guitarist. The Irish Times have written, - “…Creevy is a sensitive musician with a knowing sophisticated side…a strong technique with an ability to define layers in a multi-line texture…”

Sunday, 29th October. Tickets: 12 euros (Friends: 10 euros) .

28: Antiques Auction

Friends of the Museum are holding their first antiques auction on Saturday 28 October from 10:00 h. (Viewing Friday 10h00-16h00).
Auction organiser Carmen Hoke invites people to bring in any fine items for sale (no big items, no bric-a-brac) from Monday, 23 to Thursday, 26 between 10h00 and 16h00.

The event is part of a fundraising effort to provide equipment to enhance the facilities of the new Cultural Centre which will be offically opened on Friday 29 November. More infos: info.amigosdomuseu.sbras@gmail.com or 966 329 073.

28: Birds of the Algarve

On Wednesday 25 October at 19h00, Clive Viney will be giving the third of his talks on ´Birds of the Algarve´.

This talk will feature ´Special Birds of the Algarve´. Clive is a semi-professional bird watcher and has written a number of books on bird watching as well as writing the bird watching sections of some of the Lonely Planet Guides (including the one for Portugal).

Clive followed up his last talk with a bird walk — and he plans to do the same this time on Saturday 28 October.
