Coro dos Amigos do Museu

"Music is well said to be the speech of angels" (Thomas Carlyle)

... the speech of angels

The Story So Far!

On 23rd March 2006, the choir, consisting of just five female singers, held a trial concert at the museum.

Coro dos Amigos

Since then, the choir has been expanding. Portuguese and other members of the disbanded choir Frederike-Eberth-Chores joined, and it now has about 40 members, of whom 20 are German-speaking, 13 are English, 3 are Portuguese, 2 are Dutch and 2 are Norwegian.

Canticorum

The enlarged choir was invited by Dra.Teresa to use the Public Library for their practice sessions. As the members have different levels of musical talent, it was decided to form another "project" choir – CANTICORUM - now with 16 members, within the main choir - CORO DOS AMIGOS DO MUSEU.

The repertoire comprises mainly renaissance music (madrigals), baroque music and some romantic pieces and folk settings in many European languages including Portuguese.

The Choir is now enjoying a good reputation and is being asked to perform in other venues with other music groups.

All of this is directed with patience, tolerance, laughter and sensitivity by Walter Sulzer whose love of choral music inspires the singers to give their best harmonious and sensitive singing. It is a joy to hear.

He is supported by Sylvy Wilks who coaches the choir with fun exercises at the start of each practice.

A few more of Walter´s proverbs!

  • Two people can sing at the same time, but not talk at the same time
  • Seek among your comrades, those who know more than you
  • Dragging and hurrying the tempo are equally large mistakes
  • Without enthusiasm, nothing righteous in art will be accomplished
  • If music be the food of love, play on!
  • Miss no opportunity where you can sing together with others
  • Where there is music, there is no evil
  • Music is a divine art
  • He who doesn't sing whistles
  • Two people can sing at the same time, but not talk at the same time
  • When you sing into the ass's ear he will pull like a horse
  • Where words fail, music speaks
  • It's better to sing badly than to cry well
  • Wine and music cheer the heart
