Oo-Boop-I-Do (Sunday 1st, 8.00 pm)

They call themselves a “20’s Hot Dance Orchestra” because they feature hot-dance and jazz music of the 20’s and 30’s. This ten piece band plays lively infectious music, excellent for pure fun dancing and entertainment.

Their music appeals to a wide audience - The 20’s music was so hot that we still know it today – the Charleston being the most famous rhythm of its time. The band made its debut performance on April 30, 2006 at the Spring Fair at the Museu do Trajo de São Brás.

Oo-Boop-I-Do – seen & heard on BBC TV & Radio, renowned for superb entertainment & silent tap dance! The band comprises trumpets – trombone – saxophones – clarinets – piano – banjo – tuba – drums ... plus stylish vocals. An international band, combining talents from Portugal, Brazil, Canada, Australia, England and Wales.

It’s splendid! – not to be missed. Oo-Boop-I-Do, featuring the most popular music of the 20th century, plays again in São Brás: Sunday 1st, starting at 8.00 p.m. Tickets: 12 euros (Friends: 10 euros)

  • First film — 5.00 pm — Surviving Picasso. 1996 Merchant-Ivory film starring Anthony Hopkins. This passionate drama tells the story of Francoise Gilot, the only lover of Pablo Picasso who was strong enough to withstand his ferocious cruelty and move on with her life.   • Second film — 7.30 pm — Girl with a Pearl Earring. 2003 film from the novel by Tracy Chevalier. The film, which stars Scarlett Johansson, Colin Firth, Tom Wilkinson and Cillian Murphy, tells of a young peasant girl working in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer. German Film Night: Kebab Connection is a 2005 German-Turkish comedy film, with some slapstick, set in Hamburg ( German dialogue, with Portuguese subtitles). Filmfreak Ibo is dreaming of a career as the first German director of a Kung Fu film His pregnat girlfriend Titzi has other plans for him! Starring Denis Moschitto and Nora Tschirner.

Art Opening: São Brás and Portuguese tradition featuring the works of Valentina Brito, Linda Brubacher, Jane Page, Elsa Newton, Sesil Ceramicas, Olavo Cavaco and Erik van Lint. The event starts with a short play by members of the Friends' performance group Aperitivo.

Shakespeare Festival. Various events throught the day, featuring a talk by Peter Booker on Shakespeare's kings at 11.00 am; Romeo and Juliet puppet show at 7.00 pm; Pyramus and Thisbe at 7.30 pm; and scenes from Shakespeare at 8.30 pm. Bar and refreshments throughout the day.

The Carnation Revolution of 1975

Thirty-three years ago to the day young officers ended Portugal’s 40-year dictatorship with the bloodless "Carnation Revolution" that led to independence for its African colonies. This talk (in German) covers the reactions to this event in Germany, the EU and NATO, with original documentation and music. Further details to follow.
