Art Opening: The Human Condition (Saturday 4th August, 6.30 pm)

Probably the most stimulating subject for artists throughout the centuries, The Human Condition - the title of the latest art exhibition at the Museum in São Brás - brings together a wide variety of art forms and expressions, from the playful, colourful, Art Deco-inspired work of Geraldine Bachmann, to the emotive clay sculptures of Elza Newton. Other artists taking part in The Human Condition are Feli Sommer (black and white semi abstract sketches), Valerie Bornand (fine art sculptures in metal and resin), and Elisabeth Bardok (strong, colourful paintings in acrylic). The organisers are very pleased to have brought together such diverse and high quality artists and hope you will come and enjoy the celebratory opening night, open to all, free of charge.

Art lovers who come to enjoy the opening nights of the themed art exhibitions at the Museu de Trajo in São Brás are getting used to enjoying interesting theatre as well as interesting artworks. The opening of The Human Condition exhibition will be the fifth at which the performance group Aperitivo - created especially to provide a theatrical 'aperitivo' to the artistic 'main course' - take a stimulating part. Aperitivo, being a multi-national group in a multi-national environment, always try to combine at least three languages in their performance. For The Human Condition, three short, amusing plays by Harold Pinter have been adapted to create one 20-minute performance, the action revolving around two park benches and the various people who come to pass away some time there.

The exhibition continues until the end of September and can be seen during the usual opening hours of the museum.

A Midsummer Night's .. Music, Dance and Dream! (Sunday 19th)

The main season of activities organised by Friends of the Museum in São Brás starts in September. Before the season starts, however, Friends are holding an exhibition and demonstration of some of their activities. On 19 August starting at 8 pm Aperitivo, the hugely successful performance group, will perform the highly acclaimed play, ´Pyramus and Thisbe´from A Midsummer Night´s Dream. Not to be missed is Ralph Keenan´s performance as Bottom/Pyramus which won him the Osga (!) for best overacting actor at the Friends´Shakespeare Day last April.

During the evening there will be demonstrations of salsa by Richard and Carmen Hoke who are now running salsa classes three times a week. Jeanette Elliott will be performing Middle Eastern Dance with a view to starting up classes in September.

The two art galleries will be open and also on display will be information about other Friends´ activities.

From 9.30 pm there will be a variety of live music. Everyone is invited to come along and bring their own picnic (bar available) and enjoy a highly entertaining evening.

Entry: 12 € (Friends 10 €). All proceeds will be used to improve the infrastructure of the Old Gallery (the old stables).
