Talk by Tiago Fraga: What went wrong? An archaeological study of a 19th century military steamer
On the evening of 27 February, 1912, a terrible accident terminated the service of Canhoneira Faro, a steam gunship, purchased by Portugal from English shipyards in 1878. Apparently discovered during the Lagos Bay Survey Project campaign of 2007 and studied in the years that followed, this presentation reports on the results and intriguing questions raised by the study of this nearly 100 year old shipwreck.
Tiago Fraga is well-known to the AAA and a personal friend of several members. A native of Faro, he graduated from the Universidade Lusíada de Lisboa with a degree in History and Archaeology, subsequently receiving a Master of Arts in Anthropology from Texas A & M University. Tiago is a PADI certified Divemaster. Since 2006, he has served as Project Manager for the Underwater Cultural Heritage Survey of the Council of Lagos. Under Tiago’s supervision, during the summer of 2009 the AAA helped to sponsor a student dive training programme in the Bay of Lagos.

Aperitivo Theatre Group: Bah Humbug
“I have a dream!” Three, in fact – as miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is forced to reflect on his Past, face the Present and consider his Future options in this frivolous – and at times darkly humourous – version of Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol.
The play is a complete re-write of the old story by the multinational theatre group Aperitivo (who have managed this time to squeeze in a line or two of Ukranian to add to their usual English, Portuguese, Dutch, German and Spanish). As with all Aperitivo’s own plays, the plot has leaps into unexpected fantasy - one of Scrooge’s greatest trials is taking part in a celebrity chat show. And where is the cosy family of that nice Mr. and Mrs. Cratchett? And – oh dear! – whatever happened to Tiny Tim?
“Bah Humbug”! will be performed at the Museum in São Brás on10th and 11th December, at 19:30 on 15th December Hotel Garbe, and at the Teatro al-Masrah in Tavira on 17th December.
Entrance: 5€
