A Night At The Opera (Sunday 4th)
Lucia di Lammermoor
Sonja Frisell will be introducing her version of this opera, by Gaetano Donizetti, which was performed in the early 1990s in Calgary. Sonja is keen to present this version, which, unlike the $1.5 million spent on her version of Aida at the Met in New York, had no production costs at all! It had no scenery and only used lighting to create atmosphere. Sonja used young singers who were prepared to act.
Sonja's productions have been seen at all the major international opera houses including: the Metropolitan, Chicago, San Francisco, Covent Garden, La Scala, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Venice, Bologna, Rome, Geneva, Paris, Barcelona, Houston, Washington, Canadian Opera, Dallas, and Miami.

Oxford Fiddle Group (Thursday 15th)
Eight members of the Oxford Fiddle Group will be on a short tour of the Algarve this February. They will present their wide ranging repertoire of English, Irish, Scottish and American songs and tunes. The touring group bring together a broad range of talents and experience from folk, country and classical styles and have arranged a special performance set for the tour. The Oxford Fiddle Group will entertain with some fine instrumental pieces, with foot-tapping jigs and reels, catchy hornpipes and beautiful slow airs and laments, plus a variety of songs from their four singers which include both folk and country ballads and some lively Irish and American songs. The musicians are Tom Bell-Richards, Christine Ellis and Peter Day(fiddles), Jed Mugford and Wendy Creber (fiddles and vocals) plus Chris Mills (guitar, fiddle and vocals), Marilyn Mills (concertina), and Adrian Broadway (bass, guitar and vocals). This ensures that whilst there will be plenty of fiddle playing, there will also be other instruments to complement that and to add extra diversity and colour to the performances. The Oxford Fiddle Group perform regularly at various venues around Oxfordshire as well as an annual trip to Ireland where they have performed at the The Kilcrohane Music Festival in County Cork. Later this spring they are booked to perform at the Oxford Folk Festival (Friday 30 March - Sunday 1 April). The Oxford Fiddle Group are touring the Algarve in February, and will be performing at a number of venues, including this one at the Museum. The Oxford Fiddle Group CD ‘Bonny Kate’ contains 50 minutes of tunes and songs from the UK, Ireland and The USA and will be on sale at the concert.
