February Agenda

Tues 3rd

Algarve Archaeological Association: Living Stones – The below-ground foundations of Chichester, Winchester and Salisbury Cathedrals - an illustrated lecture by Dr John Cook FSA.

The cathedrals of Chichester, Winchester and Salisbury are linked by more than the fact that their choirs come together annually for the Southern Cathedral Festival. They also provide fascinating case studies into the way their medieval builders constructed their foundations on different terrains and the problems that ensued when those foundations went wrong. Chichester’s spire collapsed in 1861; Salisbury’s is miraculously still standing; and Winchester’s Norman tower fell in 1107 while other parts of this cathedral were saved from collapse in 1906-11 by a deep sea diver John Cook, consultant archaeologist to Winchester Cathedral and a member of Salisbury Catherdral’s Fabric Advisory Committee, investigates the archaeology of the three structures and shares his insights into medieval building techniques.

She was a pacifist and feminist. She reported from various scenes during the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the Cold War. Barbro Alving's mother, Fanny Alving, was a writer. Fri 20th

German Film Club: Emma's Glück (International Title: "Emma's Bliss"), directed by Sven Taddicken (Portuguese sub-titles). 2006.

Emma is a churlish pig breeder, brilliantly played by Jördis Triebel (who has won many awards for her performance). Not to be messed with, she single-handedly manages her family farm, wields a double-barrel shotgun, slaughters pigs and gets special thrills from her motorcycle. Emma’s farm is in debt and she has only weeks before it is auctioned, but salvation comes in the unlikely form of Max, a terminally ill car salesman, who literally crashes into her life when he loses control of his stolen Jaguar on a country road and comes to rest on Emma’s land. It doesn’t take long for Max to succumb to Emma’s earthy appeal and what ensues is a charming, heart-felt tale of romance and loss, brilliantly acted and full of wry humour.
