Museum Gallery - Art Opening: Face to Face (Saturday 19th January)
Carnival is in the air and we think of fancy dress and masks, masks that hide the real persona...... Not so the masks created by Maria de São José. They attempt to reveal the thoughts and feelings of the artist. Her works express the subconscious imagery that is accumulated along time. Maria de São José works in different media although this series of exhibits is dedicated to masks in clay.
These "faces" were originally started in the seventies and finished just recently after adding the refining last touches. The faces behind the masks gave rise to a series of paintings and drawings some of which have been included in this exhibition.
The artist, who was born in Portugal in 1949, studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Lisbon, majoring in Painting. She lived in the States for 17 years, where she further developed her talents in Art and Design at the Art Institute of Boston, Massachusetts, as well as Graphic Design at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Since 1969, she has been exhibiting all her different media, drawings, paintings and masks in group shows in Portugal, Germany and the United States. Her masks will be on show in the Museum Gallery of the Museu do Trajo de São Brás de Alportel, from 19th January to 5th March 2008. The exhibition has the appropriate title "Face to Face".
São José sometimes use the pseudonym "Saint".
