Theatre Evening: Fantasia on Apples (18th/19th/25th July)

The Golden AppleIt all started with an Apple – and then things got really interesting!

Aperitivo performance group has the same plans for its next theatrical extravaganza which will take place at the Cine-Teatro in São Brás on 18th and 19th July, followed by a performance on 25th July at the Museu do Trajo Algarvio in São Brás.

A whole Golden Delicious evening - with tart comments from Granny Smith – is what Aperitivo performance group have planned!

Ranging from the witty to the raucous (multilingual limericks bandied about by opposing teams of apple pickers), and including songs, poetry and plays in English, Portuguese, Dutch and German, the theme of the evening is – of course – Apples, and includes ‘The Original Apple, part III’, with guest appearance by God (flown in especially from Holland – which is odd as we always thought God was an Englishman); An Apple for the Teacher, set in a Portuguese language class; Slices of Apple (or the Greengrocer’s Dozen – twelve reasons why you don’t get to eat the last apple in the fruitbowl), and The Golden Apple, starring The Three Graces, FedEx Mercury, Isaac Newton and an offstage William Tell.

Anyone fancy an apple?

Concert by Loulé Recorder Group with Coro dos Amigos
(Saturday 5th July)

On Saturday, 5th July 2008, in the Igreja Matriz in São Brás, starting at 21.30, the Recorder Ensemble of Loulé will be performing a joint concert with the Canticorum choir of the Amigos do Museu, dedicated to Early Music. The concept of Early Music in the 20th Century is closely associated with performance practice; an interest in using period instruments together with historical playing techniques to recreate original ways of playing instruments from as early as the 16th Century.

The Loulé Recorder Ensemble was founded in December 1994 by students of Loulé Music Academy under the guidance of Prof. Francisco Rosado. Since then, they have performed in several schools and churches including those of Alte, Loulé, Quarteira, Tavira and Lagoa as well as in cultural venues such as the Espírito Santo Convent in Loulé and the Archaeological Museum in Faro, among others. In March 2008, they played at the first Encontro de Consorts de Flautas in Loulé.

The Ensemble has also recorded two CD’s comprising music ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century and funded by Loulé Câmara. They have performed every year at the Encontro de Música Antiga (Early Music) in Loulé and were duly mentioned in articles published by the “American Recorder” magazine and its British counterpart in 2003. Several individual members of the Ensemble have participated in various master classes given by renowned artists in, Belgium, Germany, Holland and Portugal thus demonstrating their artistic abilities.

Coro dos AmigosThe Amigos Choir was founded in 2006 and now has more than 35 members of mixed voices with a repertoire in various languages singing Secular and Sacred music ranging from the Renaissance and Baroque through the Romantic to Popular Portuguese. The choir has performed in various venues in the Algarve under its German Conductor Walter Sulzer who has worked with several choirs in different countries. The programme for the 5th July concert will include 16th Century music and song by Arcadelt, Gastoldi, Martin and Hassler, 17th Century works by Bach, Buxtehude, Dornel, Hotteterre, Mendelssohn and Purcell as well as 2oth Century music and song by Cesar Bresgen, Scott Joplin and F. Lopes Graça.

Entrance to the church and concert is free.
