Classical Guitar Concert: Josué Nunes (Saturday 15th November)

Josué NunesThis will be the first concert in the Museum of São Brás for Josué Nunes, a young guitarist from Tavira who is rapidly becoming established as one of the leading guitarists and musicians of these times, not only for his musicianship, but also for his energy and dedication to widening the audience for classical music in the Algarve.

Josué Nunes began his studies of classical guitar with the highly accomplished master Eudoro Grade, and has since taken master classes with Dejan Ivanovik, Hubert Kapel and Robert Brightmore, amongst others. He has performed solo and in groups all over Portugal, as well as at the Conservatory of Vienna. In 2002 he founded the Music Academy of Tavira, and since then has launched the festival of ‘Música Erudita’, coordinated the project ‘Music in the Churches’ and is director of the International Guitar Festival of the Algarve.

His programme for the evening of the 15th will mainly consist of works from the 1880s onwards, including music from outstanding Brazilian, Spanish and Portuguese composers and musicians such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Isaac Albeníz and João Pernanbuco, amongst others. Villa-Lobos’s nationalist sounds and rhythms of Brazil have become world famous and will be well represented in Josué’s choice of five Estudos, a Choro and Prelúdio 1, a homage to the Brazilian people.

He will also be playing one of the movements from the Suite Espanhola, originally written for piano by the legendary Isaac Albeníz. The fifth movement, entitled Asturias, and transcribed to guitar by Francisco Tárrega, has become famous in the world of classical guitar music. Sounds of Andalusian flamenco rhythms not really associated with the region of Asturias dominate the piece where one would expect to hear tolling church bells. But don’t be disappointed because vibrant church bells are what we can expect to hear in Pernanbuco’s , Sons de Carilhões (Sounds of the Bells).

Entry: 15 € (Amigos 12 €)

Opening/Preview of Art Exhibition by the Algarve Artists Network (Saturday 8th November)

Banding together to present a wide range of work and styles, the Algarve Artists’ Network are presenting a joint exhibition at the New Gallery in the Museum at São Brás opening at 18.30 on the 8th of November.

It is difficult to describe an exhibition where so many painting styles meet, but certainly adjectives like ‘vibrant’ and ‘colourful’ are appropriate; the best thing is to come along and enjoy the event.

The participating artists are: Silvia Cavelti, Jessica Dunn, Meinke Flessemann, Hilary Holt, Charlie Holt, Mary Hurst, Rosalind Hodges, John Lamonby, Seegrun Lübke, Milita, Nada Mandelbaum, Takae Nitahara, Jill Stott and Aderita Silva.
