AAA Talk by Jean-Yves Blot - Jean Boudriot and the Great ‘59 Legacy.
The 1759 Battle of Lagos Bay was a significant sea battle of the 7 Years’ War between Britain and France. At a recent symposium sponsored by the Lagos Câmara to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the clash, Jean-Yves Blot, together with his archaeologist wife María Luísa and Francisco Alves, Director of the National Centre for Nautical and Underwater Heritage, presented a detailed analysis of the battle.
Now making the presentation to the AAA in English, Jean-Yves will give a uniquely French view of the battle. He is particularly influenced by Jean Boudriot, an architect by training, a major historian of French naval technology, and Jean-Yves’ inspiring professor at the Paris Ecole des Hautes Etudes. Boudriot’s studies on French men-of-war of the period are so crucial to the study of any naval event from the second half of the 17th Century that they raise the question: where does archaeology start?
Jean-Yves Blot is a graduate of Ecole des Hautes Études in Sciences Sociales, Paris, with a specialty in Underwater and Naval Archaeology. He has taught at the University of Tours and is a continuing Doctoral Candidate in Underwater Archaeology at the University of Paris. He has participated in and directed underwater projects in locations as diverse as Mauritius, Kenya, Mauritania, India, France, Iceland, Mozambique, and China. And, perhaps most importantly to us, he has been a virtual ‘pioneer’ in Underwater Archaeology in Portugal.
