Talk: Archaeology and Text – Two Shipyards in Ming China by Sally Church, BA, MA, PhD
From 1405 to 1433, the eunuch admiral Zheng He commanded a series of maritime expeditions to India, Africa and the Arabian peninsula. Most of the ships used on those expeditions were built at the Treasure Shipyard in Nanjing, a city that is strategically located on the bend of the Yangzi river, and was then the Chinese capital. Approximately 120 years later, in the 1540s and 1550s, China's coasts were being attacked by pirates and a new era of shipbuilding was launched for military defense. A large number of these ships were built at the Longjiang Shipyard, also in Nanjing, though it was no longer the capital. These two shipyards were on different sites, had different purposes, and different historical trajectories. Moreover, our evidence about them is of two different natures - one archaeological and the other textual. This lecture will combine the two kinds of evidence into a single investigation of shipyards in the Ming period (1368-1644), intending to reveal a clearer picture of their infrastructure than has been possible before.
Sally Church is a Senior Research Associate of the Cambridge University Faculty of Asian & Middle Eastern Studies, Civilizations in Contact. She studied Chinese history at Middlebury College for her BA. She obtained an MA in Chinese literature at the University of Chicago and a PhD, also in Chinese literature, at Harvard. Her academic work focuses on various aspects of pre-modern Chinese history, especially on the maritime expeditions of Zheng He (1405-1433), the history of Chinese ships during the Ming period and earlier, and Chinese diplomatic history during the Ming. She was co-author of the Oxford Starter Chinese Dictionary, published in 2000.
