Flamenco Guitar Concert (Friday 26th)
Xavier Llonch (pictured), guitar player and singer, has always enjoyed a love of flamenco and he dedicates his life to spreading the "art of flamenco" through shows, workshops and classes. Xavier will be performing with the percussionist, Alexandre Lau, at São Brás Museum on Friday 26 October.
Xavier Llonch was born in France, son to a Spanish father and a French mother. He used to follow his father to shows held at Spanish emigrant gatherings in France. Since the age of 17, Xavier has been learning flamenco, both as a singer and as a guitar player. Xavier often goes to Spain to enhance his experience by learning from some of the traditional figures of Spanish flamenco. Throughout all these years he has always kept close contact with Seville musicians to develop his knowledge of flamenco culture. Xavier has performed widely throughout Portugal and has played at the Museum on a number of occasions.
Alexandre Lau has played over 200 concerts as a guitarist. For the last 8 years he has studied percussion and has played with a number of jazz bands. Whilst working in Barcelona he came into contact with flamenco music and he formed a group which performed in Barcelona and in Germany. Alexandre returned to Portugal in 2004 and has performed with Flamenco Lunares and with the ´Andarilho´project led by Rui Pedro.

Workshop: Belly Dance (Saturday 27th)
The Oriental Dance, also known as Raqs Sharqi or Bellydance is becoming more popular, not only because of the body and muscle control and flexibility of those who perform it, but also because of all the magic that surrounds this form of dance. It is the learning of a mysterious and ancient tradition that is lost in the beginning of time, where the body is transformed in music, in emotion, and magic happens ..
Cost: 17.50 € (or 20 €, including a CD of the music used in the workshop). Saturday 27th October, 3.00 - 6.00 pm

Art Opening - Living Landscape (Saturday 6th)
There will be some six artists taking part, showing diverse interpretations of the theme, which emphasizes the ‘life’ in the landscape – either from the way it is painted: the ‘liveliness’ coming from the artist, as with the vibrant colours and supremely confident brushwork of Elisabeth Bardok, or by the inclusion of living creatures in the landscape, as with the delicate, almost lyrical work of Anna Cumming. It will also be the first ever showing of large scale glasswork by Taran Flaten, especially commissioned for this exhibition. The exhibition will also feature work by Davy Westwell, Leena Rekola, Mandy Gleaves and Margit Pflaum.
The doors and bar open at 6.30 pm. Free entrance. Complimentary glass of wine.

Antiques Auction (Saturday 20th)
Picasso´s etching of ´the winged bull´, which he dedicated to his friend, the bullfighter,
Pablo Lalande, is just one of a number of exciting articles that have been entered for the
antiques auction being organised by Friends of the Museum.
Carmen Hoke, the event manager, is hoping that the first major auction of fine art, genuine
antiques, porcelain, silverware and quality ornaments, will bring in buyers and sellers,
not only from Portugal, but from the rest of Europe. She says that it is not
about selling bric-a brac; ´what I want here is an auction of pieces of excellent quality´.
Carmen already has a number of other interesting pieces that will be for auction:
- an Arturo Bual lithograph;
- a lithograph from the Palácio Real, Aranjuez, entitled ´Paradise Birds´;
- a mixed composition entitled ´Lina and the Swan´by the most famous living Dutch painter,
Klaus van der Locht;
- a watercolour attributed to David Cox Sr (cottage with standing figure);
and a J J Audubon lithograph (ruby crowned kinglet) which is part of a collection of 28
which can be purchased separately.
Whether you want to buy or sell (or just observe!) the auction promises to be of great
interest. Items can be brought to the New Gallery of the Cultural Centre within the
grounds of the Museu do Trajo on Monday and Tuesday 15 and 16 October from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm.
Viewing will take place on Friday 19 October 10.00 am until 6.00 pm and the auction proper will take
place between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm on Saturday 20 October.
Bar and light refreshments will be available on auction day.
