German Film Club: Ein Freund von mir ("A Friend of Mine") , directed by Sebastian Schipper, 2006 (Portuguese sub-titles)
We regret that this meeting of the Film Club has had to be cancelled. We will now be showing the film next month instead.
Karl and Hans couldn’t be more different. Karl is a young mathematician with a promising career at an insurance company, whereas the man-about-town Hans only takes up the odd job to get by. When they meet, Hans asks Karl whether he is happy. Karl doesn’t know what to reply until Hans shows him what makes him happy: girls, airplanes, the fastest backwards driving car in the world, and driving a Porsche at night in the nude along the Autobahn for example. For Hans “friendship” means to share everything, even Stelle, the queen of his heart. This is too much for Karl. But then, you can’t just get rid of a friend like Hans, and a woman like Stelle is unforgettable...

Concert - Duo Dionísio
Duo Dionísio plays music that is mostly Sephardic (from the time of the Moors in Iberia), or Sephardic based, or music that sounds to us as if it would fit in nicely with the programme. They are:
Jane Page (flute, bowed psaltery), a painter who loves to play music. She took up the flute when she was living in America and, at her first lesson here with a Portuguese flautist – Vasco Gouveia, at the Conservatório de Música in Faro – he said she had the wrong embouchure, wrong breathing, wrong stance and had obviously been trained in America. He then allowed her to do little more than play B and Bflat for the next few months until he had totally eradicated the American ‘accent’. (He later went to teach in Boston; one could almost pity the Bostonians.)
Francisco Brazão (voice, flute, drum) has been playing music virtually all his life, starting in church as soon as he was big enough to reach the keyboard. He began his flute training at the Conservatório de Música in Faro with Vasco Gouveia, has a degree in music education, teaches music and singing and is currently training with Ana Ester Neves as an opera singer. He is choirmaster of the Lagoa choir and has performed as a singer with several groups and orchestras.
Jane and Francisco met sixteen years ago when Vasco Gouveia (as above) introduced them to each other because he thought their playing styles would blend well. He told them to go and play together, and, since he never told them to stop . . .
